@Matt_Alt @BenjaminDooley @hikarimaehida I agree that the pay could be much better, and many industry practices need to be improved, but characterizing all animators as living in extreme poverty seems a bit disingenuous.
posted at 03:13:46
@Matt_Alt @BenjaminDooley @hikarimaehida Does this article talk about the fact that industry average for pay goes considerably up when the animator turns into their 30s?

The average wage for animators actually becomes on par with the national average once their 40s.

@uzaigaijin Novels usually retain a high degree of "profanity fidelity." But everything depends on the translator. Some like to retain the grittiness, while others will cut out entire chapters at times. The later doesn't happen as often now, but it still happens from time to time.
posted at 22:39:43
@uzaigaijin In many cases, the same film will be translated differently depending on if it is shown on broadcast TV or sold on disc. The translation and voice acting is often different for the different versions. Generally speaking, TV is made tame too often, while films retain some punch.

*Seijun Suzuki. Personally, "Tokyo Drifter" is a must see film if you're interested anime and its influences.
posted at 15:45:59
I do not claim my reasoning is fool-proof in all circumstances. Many factors are involved during the translation process. But I did wanted to point out that a hesitation to adding coarse language has some validity aside from the pursuit of a literal translation.
posted at 15:08:09
Let's be honest. If every antagonist that spoke with a British used expressions appropriate for a foulmouthed American, they would not be as interesting, would they? Uniformity is a simply and laudable concept, but it can quickly morph into a tyrannical and self-defeating goal.
posted at 15:03:50
Why are the films by Ozu, Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Naruse, Seijyun Suzuki, Nagisa Ooshima and others still very popular among overseas film lovers? They do not adhere to classic Hollywood continuity narrative, but they still have the power to captivate audiences.
posted at 14:58:22
Different languages take different approaches toward presenting various degrees of frankness and/or hostility. In some cases, the target audiences may not appreciate such nuances and therefore they must be substituted. But in other cases, these idiosyncrasies are welcomed.
posted at 14:56:04
But let's reverse this logic. "American speech in US films and TV is too vulgar, and therefore the coarse language needs to be dialed back to make it palatable for Japanese audiences." While that may actually happen, that sounds very pretentious to my ears.
posted at 14:55:45
Finally, I strongly disagree with the contention that "Japanese speech is too polite so swear words need to be added since they don't use it as often enough to make it palatable for English (American) audiences." This reasoning is flawed in assuming there is one uniform audience.
posted at 14:54:56
I also feel an over-reliance on vulgar expressions to construct distinct personality can reflect a shortcoming on the part of the writer to build character using adequate vocabulary and idioms. It also insults the intelligence on the part of the audience to a certain degree.
posted at 14:52:56
If the original work did not have such shock value, then the translation should not have such shock value as well. It is fun, but that is comedy achieved as a through the construction of inappropriateness. A great way to form comedy yes, but can be distraction.
posted at 14:52:04
It's also very easy to fall into the trap of attributing entertainment in the shock value that is achieved from interjecting extreme profanity with the seemingly benign and innocent visual characters that make up many manga, anime and games.
posted at 14:51:44
Expressions such as "fuck you," "motherfucker," "cocksucker," "son of a bitch" and such can easily be interpolated with sexual innuendo and invite associations that the original work did not intend. The degree of vulgarity needs to be considered.
posted at 14:51:23
While using swear words for English translations of Japanese works may work at times, I am very careful about the implications of its usage. I tend to be very conservative in its employment, not because I dislike swear words, but because I am aware of the baggage it can have.

posted at 20:54:40
今日の池上彰さんのニュース解説で株価上昇を日銀の異次元緩和を持ち出したのは疑問。「今、不景気なのに株価爆上がり」は
1)景気回復への期待
2)コロナ渦で不動産、資源が駄々余りとなっている一方、国債とかの債権買っても金利低いので魅力薄い
ので株に流入してる、で説明できるんでは?
