This is the last day of the Heisei era. It is raining lightly in Tokyo, a fitting weather for a day of reflection, remembering, and a little bit of soul searching. Tomorrow, a new era of Reiwa (Beautiful Harmony) begins. May what happens be true to that name.

There are certain things in life that might not be known to that many people, and yet, if you do get to know them, they would give you limitless, life-long pleasure. When I think of the things I love, I realise that they are just so.

Contingency is a mixture of the certain and uncertain. The self provides not only the certain but also the uncertain, as there would be always an element of the unknown within oneself. It takes both the certain and the uncertain to dance the tango of life.

There is not such a thing as a supernatural because if it exists, it would be a part of the nature, and therefore "intranatural". It is only our categorical imagination that is limited, not the natural world.

In my teens I used to want everything at this very moment. Needless to say, it was impossible and I could not achieve it. However, these days I sometimes wonder if there wasn't some truth in my teenage burst of angst and desire. I want everything at this very moment.

All day long I go zigzag through the streets of Tokyo, from one assignment to next meeting, meeting with and talking to people, musing and pondering on the way. In a moment of idleness I tweet, looking through the window at the greens of the imperial palace. Summer is near.

Once thing I miss when I am out of Japan is the spectrum of excellent fast food restaurants of beef bowl, soba noodles, and curry where you can just sit, order, and eat the delicious dish delivered with speed. No fuss, just pure professionalism.

After nine days in Vancouver for TED and two talks (one on ikigai and one on Buddhism), I am now back to my hometown, Tokyo. On the return flight I watched three films: The favourite, The Wife, and El último traje.

Soils and rocks are typically overlooked but they do play crucial roles in the earth’s ecosystem. There should be elements similar to them in the life of every one of us, underestimated and yet playing fundamental roles. #TED2019 induced thoughts.

I think there are several sleep medicines which woul keep a person, a nation, or a whole civilization dormant for a long time. Metacognition should be turned into a wake up call. #TED2019

I guess the internet can be a perpetrator of reason as well as a magnifier of emotion. The brain, when successful, does just that. Maybe there is a path of transfer from the human brain to cyber technology? #TED2019

Quite stunning images of the beauty of the ephemeral human activities at #TED2019 The essence of our existence is impermanence. Images transform that onto a new dimension to be appreciated anew.

Interesting conversation on late stage capitalism. Perhaps we need a revision of the Leviathan scheme of social contract theory to better face the realities of today’s capitalism? #TED2019

Lots of mention on scalability and how to scale. It seems increasingly important to think beyond the digital network metaphor, in order to be truly inclusive and effective, although the internet does continue to play an integral part. #TED2019

I feel that the problems we are facing are of such complex natures that there are no silver bullet solutions. Increasingly, we need to use our intuition in order to get hold of the bigger picture. That seems to be happening at #TED2019

This year, the cherry blossoms are staying for unusually long time, at least around Tokyo, due to the spell of cold weather after they bloomed. The sense of permanence is only illusory. One of these days they will be blown away, and it would be early summer, with greens all over.
